Join us this February for activity-specific open recreation times.

There are a number of unstructured opportunities for open recreation and physical activity that currently exist in our facilities on campus.

We offer drop-in basketball, volleyball, badminton, and futsal at both the PAC and Education gyms.

Family and Lane Swims

Family Swims
Designed for families. There are no designated lanes available during open swim. Parent/Guardians MUST be in the water with the children. Children under the age of six, must be within arms reach of a parent/guardian.

Join us every Sunday from 1:30pm - 4:30pm in the PAC Pool!

Lane Swims
All participants must be able to swim 25 metres comfortably.

Workout of the Week

Head over to the newly refinished, Fitness Loft at Education (formely the Education Balcony) to try the posted workout of the week!

The fitness loft has just added three new treadmills, four new bikes, an incline bench, new dumbbells and an Elliptical to the space!

Each workout will consist of a mixture of cardio and strength. Visitors of the space will have the opportunity to challenge the workout and try something different. Staff will be present to ask question on the posted exercises. Workouts will also be posted online so you can try it on your own at home!

Indoor Run, Bike & Row Challenge

Come to the Fit Centre or Fitness Loft during the month of February. Use the treadmill, bike, or rower track your kms and enter the draw box at the front of the Fit Centre using your NSID.  There will be a leader board at each location. The leader in each category will receive a prize!

Runs February 1-28 with prizes being handed out immediately following.

Grippy Grabbers Challenge

We will have a hand dynamometer at the Climbing Wall desk for the entire month of February.

You can measure your grip strength, and we will post the top 3 on a white board. Prizes will be given
to winners at the end of the month.

Fitness Loft at ED - Drop in!

This space has been redesigned to offer unique programming and additional space for fitness on campus. We plan to offer bookable spots for women's only, open fitness, and personal/group training in this space.

It is located in the recreation wing in the Education Building and offers all members the chance to be active in our 2,500 sq ft facility.

Fitness Class Highlight

Cardio Salsa
High-energy, fun and easy to follow, this dance-focused cardio workout is perfect for all fitness levels. If you love music, groovin' and movin', this class is for you! No dance experience necessary.

Join us Friday, February 1 at 12:05pm in the PAC for Cardio Salsa!

Week 2: February 2nd - 8th

Bike Challenge

The Bike Challenge is designed to engage a number of students, colleges, faculty and staff in a fun event to raise awareness for the University’s BeActive promotions for the month of February.

February 6th, 2025
PAC 2nd floor Foyer
11:00 am – 1:00 pm

Description:

  • Stationary bikes will be set up on the 2nd floor foyer in the PAC.
  • Teams will register to reserve a spot in the challenge.
  • Teams will be comprised of faculty and staff, students, colleges, administrative units or other on campus groups.
  • The goal is to ensure the group’s assigned bike is in motion from the start of the challenge until the end (11:00 am – 1:00 pm).
  • Sign-up sheets with time intervals (at teams discretion) will be assigned to each bike.
  • It is the group’s responsibility to fill those time slots to ensure maximum participation.
  • Any rider listed on the sign up sheet will be entered into a draw swag basket
  • During the rider’s assigned time on the bike – donations will be accepted for specific teams or the donor may pick a rider to assign a physical task.
  • Teams that raise the most money will win a prize package from the Physical Activity Complex
  • “Pre” fundraising is encouraged
  • Electronic donations can be accepted on site at the event through “Square”
  • All proceeds will go to the College of Kinesiology’s Special Needs Trust Fund

Registration Process

  • We have room for 8-10 teams
  • Only the team captain is required to register and reserve a bike for the challenge

Fitness Class Highlight

Sculpt

Tone your muscles and build all-over strength in this class using a variety of equipment including dumbbells, resistance bands, bars and your own body weight. This class focuses on using proper technique to safely get a full body sculpting workout. 

As a member, you can try out this fitness class at no extra cost on Tuesdays at 12:05 pm or 5:45 pm, Thursdays at 5:45 pm or Saturdays at 9:15 pm.

Wall Social

The wall social is a great introduction to the rock-climbing community on campus. You will have the opportunity to meet new friends and belay partners, so individuals are welcome to attend this event!

There is a one-time fee of $10 to cover the orientation costs and belay fee.

Join us on February 5th, 2025 from 6:30 - 9:30pm.

Local Business Highlight

Throughout the month, we have invited local business to come highlight their services and programs who do a great job in the community promoting physical activity.

Week 3: February 9th - 15th

Climbing Competition

Get active, challenge your climbing skills, and meet people! Fun and inclusive for all levels of ability.

February 9th, 2025
Age 18+ event. Snacks Provided. Participants can compete for prizes in one or more events. Women’s and Open registration groups. Door Prizes.

Schedule:
Arrival/warm up: 12:00-12:30pm
Top-Rope Routes: 12:30-3:00pm
Speed Climbing and Egg Carton Freestyle: 3:00-5:00pm

Entry Fee: $10 for students/members, $20 for non-members (includes drop in)

Fitness Class Highlight

Yoga for Healthy Backs Fitness Class

Using special props, you will be guided through a series of gentle postures and movement that focus on the skeleton. Feel the tension releasing from the neck, shoulders, upper and lower back and hips. Healthy movement patterns are created by increasing mobility. This class is ideal for anyone suffering from pain, tension, stress and anyone that has a BACK!

As a member, you can try out this fitness class at no extra cost on Thursdays at 12:05 pm.

Week 4: February 16th - 22nd

Fitness Class Highlight

Zumba

Love Latin music and dancing? Zumba is a high energy, Latin-dance inspired fitness class.  You’ll learn the four main rhythms Merengue, Salsa, Cumbia and Reggaeton in addition to other world rhythms, in a fun, supportive, outdoor environment.  This class is good for all levels of dance experience.

As a member, you can try out this fitness class at no extra cost on Mondays at 12:05 pm or 4:45 pm and Saturdays at 10:30 am.

Swimming Lessons

Offered February 19 - 23, 2024 in the PAC, patrons of all ages can expect to be in the pool twice a day and complete their level within a week!

  • National Lifeguard
  • Livesaving Instructor

We are also offering:

  • Babysitter Course on Tuesday/Wednesday February 18/19, 2025 from 10:00am - 2:00pm both days.
  • CPR C/ Standard First-aid recert on Friday, February, 21, 2025 from 8:30am - 4:30pm
  • CPR C/Standard First-aid course on Monday/Tuesday February 24/25, 2025.

February Break Kids Camps

The Children’s Activity Camps are weeklong, half and full-day camps for children ages 5 to 12. A variety of different sports and activities are offered to provide children with an opportunity to learn new skills in a safe and non-competitive environment.

Fitness Class Highlight

Cardio Kickboxing

Cardio Kickboxing is a high energy, fun cardio & strength class that is guaranteed to give you a good workout! Cardio kickboxing incorporates stand up combat sports with cardio drills to create a one-of-a-kind workout! Choreographed to music, each track will keep you moving, keeping a balance between cardio, sculpt and core strength. Recommended for all fitness levels.

Cardio Kickboxing is offered weekly on Wednesdays at 7:00pm and Sundays at 4:30pm in the PAC!
