Game Rules

General

  1. All players must present their valid U of S student card to participate in any Campus Rec sports league.
  2. Substitutes are allowed during the regular season and must have their valid U of S student card present.
  3. There is a maximum of two staff/faculty allowed per team and they must pay a $75 recreation fee in order to play.
  4. In order to be eligible to play in playoffs, players must have been present for at least 50% of games for the team they are registered on.
  5. Treat all opponents and recreation staff with respect.
  6. Current U of S Huskie Hockey players (roster or red-shirt) are not eligible to play in Campus Recreation hockey leagues. Any team who uses one of these players will default any/all games that this player played.

Non-Contact

  1. Campus Rec Hockey is a non-contact hockey league.
  2. The referees will be enforcing what is known as “non-directing/non-intent” contact hockey.
  3. The opposing player must play the puck and not the man.
  4. You cannot play the body to gain control of the puck.
  5. Body contact penalties will be assessed as double minor penalties.

Stick Penalties

  1. Any intentional contact between a stick and an opposing player will be penalized.
  2. Any stick swinging used to intimidate an opposing player will be penalized.
  3. Any “attempt to injure” misuse of the stick will result in a major penalty, and the incident will be reviewed by the Suspension/Appeal Committee.

3   Minute Rule

  1. Any penalty in the last three minutes of the game will result in a penalty shot awarded to the opposing team. This includes a delay of play penalty.
  2. During the last 3 minutes of play in the final period, all line changes must be made on the fly.  If teams attempt to change during a stoppage in play at this point, a minor penalty can be assessed and a penalty shot awarded to the opposing team.

Suspensions

  1. Any player who fights and receives a game misconduct or match penalty, will come before the Suspensions and Appeals Committee (SAC).
  2. Any 6 minute major penalty will result in an automatic game misconduct, and will be reviewed by the SAC.
  3. A player who receives a suspension will be notified through their captain, and will have until Friday at 4:15pm of the week they have been notified to hand in an appeal.
  4. Appeals should be typewritten letters, explaining what happened, and why you think you should not be suspended.  The appeal will be heard by the SAC, and the captain will be notified after the meeting as to the result of the appeal.
  5. Any physical or verbal abuse towards any Campus Rec employees (officials or equipment room managers), will be brought before the SAC.
  6. Any team that has an excessive number of infractions that come before the Suspension/Appeal Committee, will come under review and may be expelled from the league.
  7. Any incident that requires action from the Suspension/Appeal Committee will result in a strike against the team. If your team receives two strikes the team is ineligible for playoffs and/or can be removed from the league.

Off-side

  1. If an attacking player is trapped offside when a teammate shoots the puck into the attacking zone, or the puck is deflected into the attacking zone off of a defending player, but a defensive player is able to play the puck, the referee will signal a delayed offside.
  2. The offside will be nullified if the defending team passes or carries the puck into the neutral zone or all attacking players in the attacking zone clear that zone by making skate contact with the blue line.
  3. The red line has been eliminated for the purpose of 2 line passes (icing calls are still made).

Rules

  1. Any player receiving 3 penalties throughout the game will be ejected for the remainder of that game.
  2. All players (including goalkeepers) must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet, with a CSA approved full facial shield.  Any alterations will result in that player not playing until the problem is fixed.  If the player refuses to change, their team will receive a minor penalty.
  3. Short-handed teams must change on the fly.  Failure to do so will result in a minor penalty.
  4. Each team is allowed 1 captain and 2 assistants.  These are the only people who are to clarify situations with the referees.
  5. Each team must wear a distinctive team colour.
  6. Slapshots are only allowed in A, B, and C leagues. For D leagues and all Women's leagues both captains must be in agreement prior to the game starting.
  7. All minor penalties will be 3 minutes, and major penalties 6 minutes, due to the fact that the game is played in a straight time format.
  8. If a team does not have enough players (5 skaters + 1 goalie) ready 10 minutes after the scheduled start of the game, the game will be defaulted.  Referees will set the clock for 10 minutes at the scheduled start time and a default will be declared at the end of this time.
  9. Any time a team gets coincidental penalties, the teams play 5-on-5.  If one team only has 5 skaters, they will not be penalized any further, and will play short-handed.  They will not default the game until they cannot put 3 skaters on the ice.
  10. Any teams receiving two defaults during the regular season is not eligible for playoffs.
  11. Ties during regular season games will remain a tie and reported in the standings as such.
  12. In the event of a tie during playoffs a five minute overtime period will be played. Changes must be made on the fly as per the last three minutes of the game.
  13. If at the conclusion of the period the game still remains tied then there will be a shootout with five players per team. If the game remains tied at the conclusion of the first shootout then the shootout will be repeated until a winner has been determined. In the event that the shootout must be repeated the same players may not participate again until all other members of the team have done so.

Major Incident Rule

  1. The first major incident (write-up) results in action by the SAC and the team receives one strike.
  2. The second major incident results in further action by the SAC, and will result in an additional strike. If your team receives two strikes the team is ineligible for playoffs and/or can be removed from the league.
