Game Rules

General

  1. Rules follow the Official FIBA Basketball Rules.
  2. All players must present their valid U of S student card to participate in any Campus Rec sports league.
  3. Substitutes are allowed during the regular season and must have their valid U of S student card present.
  4. There is a maximum of two staff/faculty allowed per team and they must pay a $75 recreation fee in order to play.
  5. In order to be eligible to play in playoffs, players must have been present for at least 50% of games for the team they are registered on.
  6. Treat all opponents and recreation staff with respect.
  7. Jewelry such as watches and necklaces must be removed prior to game start for player safety.
  8. Current U of S Huskie Basketball players (roster or red-shirt) are not eligible to play in Campus Recreation basketball leagues. Any team who uses one of these players will default any/all games that this player played.
  9. Designated home teams wear light colours and away teams wear dark colours.

Players

  1. All games are 5 vs 5
  2. In Men’s and Women’s leagues, there is no gender mix.
  3. In CoRec leagues, there must be at least 2 players from each gender on the court at all times.
  4. Games may not start unless each team has 5 players.
  5. A game is defaulted if a team does not have 5 players, 10 minutes after the scheduled start time.

Substitutions

  1. Substitutions are unlimited; play must be stopped by a whistle before substitutions are allowed.
  2. The referee must be informed of all substitutions

Scorekeeper

  1. Courts in the PAC are supplied with whiteboards; both teams are responsible for keeping score for 1 half of the game.
  2. Courts in the Education Gym are supplied with a chalkboard; both teams are responsible for keeping score for 1 half of the game.

Rules

  1. Games consist of two 25 minute straight time halves, with a 5 minute halftime break
  2. 3 point shots will be counted.
  3. In CoRec leagues, 3 points are awarded if shot from behind the men’s three point line.
  4. Non-shooting fouls result in an inbounds for the team that was fouled.
  5. Each team is allowed one time-out per half.
  6. The game starts with a jump-ball at center court. Halves are started according to possession.
  7. Team fouls are accumulated. Once a team accumulates 7 fouls in a half, a bonus will be rewarded. When a team is in “Bonus”, all fouls are considered shooting fouls which result in the 2 foul shots awarded.  
  8. Unsportsmanlike fouls will result in two free throws being awarded to the other team.  Offending team will lose of possession of the ball.  These fouls include aggressive contact is made with intent to still play the ball.
  9. Two technical fouls will result in an automatic ejection of the player(s). One free throw will be awarded to the other team per technical foul.  After the free throw, the throw-in shall be administered by the team which had control of the ball or was entitled to the ball when the technical foul was called, from the place nearest to where the ball was located when the game was stopped.  These fouls include excessive verbal abuse towards opposing players or officials or aggressive contact is made with intent to harm.
